About Drumsticks & Drum Rods

Sticks are the consumable every drummer goes through, and buying in multi-packs makes sense for working drummers, teachers, schools and rehearsal rooms. This section is ProMark: Classic Forward and Rebound hickory sticks, all in 4 Pair packs, plus Hot Rods and Cool Rods.

The Classic Forward range comes in 7A, 5A, 5B and 2B with an Oval Tip. The Rebound range comes in 5A and 5B with an Acorn Tip, as FireGrain 4 Pair packs or a 5A 4 Pair with one FireGrain pair included.

The size code is the first choice. 7A is the lightest and thinnest, suited to quieter music and smaller hands. 5A is the all-rounder most drummers start with. 5B is thicker and heavier for louder playing, and 2B is the heaviest here, for hard hitters or for practice. Then the model: as the names suggest, Classic Forward puts more weight towards the front of the stick for a full, driving stroke, while Rebound is balanced to bounce back off the head for speed. Tip shape matters mostly on cymbals: an oval tip gives a broad, fuller cymbal sound, while an acorn tip gives a rounder, darker one.

Rods are for gigs where sticks are too loud: acoustic sets, small rooms and quiet venues. The Hot Rods give more volume and attack, while the Cool Rods are lighter and softer. Drumstick Sizes Explained covers sizes and tips, and stick bags and tape are in Drum Accessories.

Drumsticks & Rods FAQs

What is the difference between 5A and 5B drumsticks? 5B sticks are thicker and heavier than 5A, giving more volume and a fuller sound. 5A is lighter and quicker, and is the usual starting point.

When should I use rods instead of sticks? Rods are for quieter settings such as acoustic gigs, small venues and rehearsals, where they keep the kit’s attack while bringing the volume right down.
