Settle the fixture type first, because it decides what the rig can do. Spots give a hard edge with gobos for texture and aerial work. Washes cover area with smooth colour and usually a zoom, and are what most function and corporate work actually needs. Beams throw tight columns for punchy aerial looks and do very little useful on a stage floor. Hybrids switch between all three, at the cost of doing each slightly less well than a dedicated fixture, which is a sensible trade for hire stock and a poor one for a fixed rig with a known job.

After that, check output against the ambient light you are fighting rather than against another fixture’s headline figure, the zoom range on washes, and the DMX footprint against your console and universe count. Modern fixtures in extended mode eat channels quickly, and a rig that fits on paper in basic mode may not once you switch modes for finer control.

The physical side matters as much as the optics. Check the weight against your truss and clamps, allow for the yoke swing so fixtures do not collide when they pan, and fit an independent safety bond to every one. For exposed outdoor positions, buy a fixture with an appropriate ingress rating rather than covering an indoor unit, and check the housing specification before committing to an open-air rig.
