3-Pin vs 5-Pin
The DMX512 standard specifies 5-pin XLR. 3-pin XLR is widely used on entry-level and DJ lighting fixtures but should never be used for analogue audio runs — the wiring carries DMX data, not balanced audio, and connecting a microphone or line source can damage equipment.
