Distance decides the format. Choose UHD-SDI for 4K paths and HD-SDI where 1080 is the ceiling. On HDMI, match the version to the job rather than defaulting to the newest: 2.0 handles 4K playback, while 2.1 buys the bandwidth for 8K or high-frame-rate 4K. Keep spares of the short lengths, because HDMI connectors take the most abuse in a rack and are usually the first casualty on a changeover.
