About Mirror Balls & Mirror Ball Rotators
A mirror ball turns one tight beam of light into hundreds of moving points across a room, and it is still the quickest way to make a dance floor feel like a party. Venues, wedding and function suppliers, DJs and hire companies buy them for clubs, functions, retro nights and set dressing.
The range is Equinox mirror balls in silver and gold, from compact to statement size: 30cm (12″), 40cm (16″), 50cm (20″), 60cm (24″), 75cm (30″), 1m (40″) and 1.2m (48″). Gold versions run from 30cm (12″) up to 1m (40″) for warmer reflections and a different look when the ball is unlit. Some sizes also come with a stated facet size: the 75cm (30″) and 1m (40″) are available with 5mm Facets, and the 1m (40″) and 1.2m (48″) with 20mm Facets.
Size is about the room and the sightline. Small balls suit bars and DJ setups, while 1m and 1.2m balls are statement pieces for large rooms and stages. Facet size changes the effect: smaller facets throw a fine, dense spray of points, while larger facets throw fewer, bigger and brighter spots. Whatever the size, a ball needs a focused light hitting it, which is the job of pinspots.
To make it turn, the Elumen8 MR350 IP65 DMX Mirror Ball Rotator (MIRR23) is an IP65 DMX rotator, so rotation can be run from the lighting desk. Plan the hanging point with whoever looks after rigging in the venue.
Mirror Balls FAQs
What size mirror ball do I need? Go by the room: smaller balls from 30cm (12″) suit bars and DJ setups, while 1m (40″) and 1.2m (48″) balls are for large rooms and stages where the ball is a centrepiece.
What difference does facet size make? Smaller facets, such as 5mm, give a finer, denser spray of reflections. Larger 20mm facets give fewer, bigger and brighter spots.
How do I light a mirror ball? Point one or more pinspots at the ball and use a motor to turn it, such as the Elumen8 MR350, which can be controlled over DMX.
