About DMX Cables
Purpose-made DMX512 lighting data cables from LEDJ and Elumen8, spanning three-pin and five-pin XLR assemblies from half a metre to twenty metres, IP-rated builds on Seetronic and Neutrik TOP connectors, two-pair five-pin versions, Hydralock assemblies and combi cables that carry power and data in a single loom.
Proper DMX cable is 110 ohm data cable, not a repurposed microphone lead, and every assembly here is built as such. Microphone cable has the wrong impedance for DMX512 and produces reflections that show up as fixtures flickering, dropping to random values or ignoring a channel entirely. Because it usually works on a short run with a few fixtures, the fault only appears once the rig grows, and it gets blamed on the fixtures. Swapping mic leads out for real data cable is one of the cheapest reliability improvements a lighting rig can have.
Five-pin is the connector the standard specifies and three-pin is what many compact fixtures actually carry, so buy to your fixture stock and keep the two populations clearly separated in the workshop, ideally by colour or label. Adaptor leads between the two are stocked, but a rig that needs a bag of adaptors every night will eventually be missing one.
Two other choices matter. IP-rated assemblies suit festivals, outdoor architectural work and anywhere connections sit exposed to weather, and they are far cheaper than the damage a wet connection causes. Combi cables that run mains and DMX together cut the cable count on truss hops considerably, which saves time on the ladder and reduces the number of things that can be pulled out.
Once a chain grows past a handful of fixtures, add a splitter rather than daisy-chaining further, and terminate the end of the run. DMX Cable FAQs
Can I use a mic lead for DMX? It often half-works, which is the trap: microphone cable has the wrong impedance for DMX512 and causes flickering, random values and ignored channels as runs grow. Every assembly here is true 110 ohm data cable.
