Battery uplighting sells itself: no cables across a wedding venue, no trip hazards, twenty minutes to dress a room. The reason it is worth thinking about before buying is that these are not really fixtures, they are systems, and the fixture is the least important part of the decision.
What matters is how they charge, how they are controlled, and whether the ones you buy next year will work with the ones you buy today.
Why you are buying a system, not a fixture
A working battery uplighting kit needs four things to line up.
- Enough runtime to cover the event with margin, including the setup time before the doors open.
- A charging arrangement that recharges the whole set at once, without unpacking every unit.
- A control method that reaches every fixture without cables.
- Consistent colour across every unit in the room, which in practice means one model.
Get any of those wrong and the kit is a nuisance. A set of eight fixtures that must be charged individually overnight, in a case that does not charge, is a set you will stop hiring out.
Runtime, and the number that matters
Manufacturers quote runtime at a stated brightness and colour, and the figure is usually for a single static colour at less than full output. Real jobs are longer than the quoted figure suggests they will be.
- Budget for the whole event plus the build. A twelve-hour wedding is not an eight-hour battery.
- Static warm colours draw less than full white. Full white on all emitters is the worst case.
- Colour chases and strobing consume more than a static wash.
- Batteries age. A three-year-old fixture does not deliver its original runtime.
If the room needs light for longer than a charge, the answer is either a larger battery model, a mains top-up during a break, or twice as many fixtures used at lower output.
Charging cases are the real product
The professional versions of these fixtures are sold in charging flight cases, and that is not an upsell. A case that charges six or eight fixtures in place, from one mains lead, is the difference between a kit you can turn round overnight and one you cannot.
For a hire stock it also solves storage, transport and the perennial problem of missing power supplies. If you are buying more than a handful of fixtures, buy the case version.
Wireless DMX and the compatibility trap
Most battery uplighters include a wireless DMX receiver, and this is where mixing brands becomes a problem. Different manufacturers use different wireless systems, and they do not interoperate.
- Fixtures with built-in wireless DMX need a matching transmitter, usually from the same manufacturer.
- Some ranges use their own proprietary link, which is fine until you add a different brand to the same room.
- Standalone modes, where fixtures run a built-in colour or chase without a controller, are the fallback and are perfectly adequate for a static wedding wash.
- Infrared remotes are common on entry fixtures and are line-of-sight only, which is awkward once the fixtures are behind tables.
The practical rule is to standardise on one range. Two brands in one room means two transmitters and two sets of colour behaviour, and it will show on a white wall.
Why colour consistency matters more here than anywhere
Uplighters are usually pointed at a plain wall and viewed side by side. That is the most unforgiving way to view a colour mix. Two fixtures from different production runs, let alone different manufacturers, will not match, and on a white wall the difference is obvious to a client.

Can I mix brands of battery uplighter in one room?
Physically yes, practically no. The wireless DMX systems generally do not interoperate, and the colours will not match on a plain wall. Standardise on one range.
