Sennheiser EW-D vs EW-DX: Which Digital Wireless System?

Both are Sennheiser’s current digital wireless. One is built for a handful of channels and a fast setup, the other for channel density, networking and installation.

Sennheiser replaced the long-running analogue evolution wireless range with two digital families at once, and the naming does very little to explain which is which. EW-D and EW-DX are not good and better. They are aimed at genuinely different jobs.

The short answer

EW-D for bands, schools, houses of worship and venues running up to roughly eight channels, where fast setup matters and nothing needs to be controlled remotely. EW-DX where channel count, networked control or installation matter: theatres, conference venues, broadcast and AV contractors.

The crossover is not exact, but if you are running more than about eight channels, or anyone will ever ask you to monitor the system from a control room, you are in EW-DX territory.

What both have in common

Both are true digital systems with the same underlying advantages over the analogue G4 generation.

  • No companding, so no compression artefacts on the audio.
  • 134 dB of input dynamic range, meaning no sensitivity setting to get wrong on the transmitter.
  • Automatic frequency setup and one-touch sync to the receiver.
  • Rechargeable battery options with real state-of-charge reporting rather than a bar graph.

Frequency variants, and why they matter

Both families are sold in several frequency variants, and the one you buy is not a preference, it is a legal and practical constraint. In the UK the licence-free shared band is Channel 38, and the variants that sit inside it are the ones most buyers want.

The wider switching bandwidth on EW-DX is not a marketing number. It is what lets you fit more simultaneous channels into the available space, and it is the main technical reason to choose it for a big system. The licensing side is covered in UK wireless microphone licensing.

Choosing between them

Answer these, in order.

  • How many channels, now and in three years? Under eight, EW-D. Over that, EW-DX.
  • Will anyone need to see or change the system from somewhere other than the rack? If yes, EW-DX.
  • Do you need table or boundary transmitters for conference or council work? Only EW-DX has them.
  • Is the bodypack going on a performer who will sweat on it every night? The LEMO connector on EW-DX is the more robust choice.
  • Is the budget the binding constraint and the channel count small? EW-D, and spend the difference on better capsules.

Frequently asked questions

Is EW-DX just a better EW-D?

No. It is a wider, networkable, more configurable platform for larger systems. On a four-channel band rig it offers very little that EW-D does not, at a noticeably higher price.

Can EW-D and EW-DX work together?

They coexist in the same rack and the same frequency plan, and both work with the EW-D ASA antenna splitter, so mixed systems are normal. The transmitters are not interchangeable between receiver families.

Do my G4 capsules fit?

Yes. Both use the same capsule mount as G3 and G4, so MMD, MME, MMK and Neumann KK heads carry straight over. The transmitters and receivers do not cross generations.

Which one for a school?

EW-D in almost every case. A school hall rarely needs more than a handful of channels, and the money is better spent on capsules and a decent antenna distribution than on networking nobody will use.

Do I need a licence?

For Channel 38 variants you need the shared licence, which is inexpensive and covers the whole UK. Other bands need a site-specific licence. It is all in the CH38 guide.
