Rogue is Chauvet Professional’s workhorse moving head series, which Chauvet describes as built for performance, value and reliability, alongside its tour-grade Maverick series. One line on the brand, because it causes confusion: Chauvet Professional and Chauvet DJ are separate brands from the same company, so a Chauvet DJ fixture such as the Intimidator Hybrid 251SR is not a Rogue and is not part of this comparison.

This guide covers which Rogue does what. For the general difference between spot, wash, beam and hybrid fixtures, read our moving head buying guide first; it is not repeated here.

The short answer

  • Need an LED wash for a stage, church or event rig indoors? The Rogue R1X Wash (7 x 25W RGBW) for smaller rooms and side washes, the Rogue R2X Wash (19 x 25W RGBW, five pixel zones) when you need more than twice the output.
  • Want beams and washes from one small head? The Rogue R1 BeamWash: 7 x 40W RGBW, a 3.4° to 67.7° zoom range and 5.35 kg.
  • Need gobos? The R1E Spot (200W LED, one colour wheel), the R2E Spot (350W LED, two colour wheels, frost) or the R3E Spot (350W LED plus an 8.4° to 42.8° zoom).
  • Need big aerial beams? The Rogue R3 Beam: a 300W Ushio NSL lamp focused down to 0.8°.
  • Outdoors, or in heavy fog and haze? The Outcast models are IP65 (IP66 for the marine “M” versions). The Outcast 2X Wash, Outcast 3X Wash, Outcast 3 Spot and Outcast 2 Hybrid cover wash, spot and an all-rounder.

How the Rogue names work

There are two lines in the family, and the type of light is in the name.

  • R-series (R1, R2, R3): indoor fixtures, all rated IP20, dry location only.
  • Outcast: IP65-rated versions for temporary outdoor and wet use. Models ending in M (Outcast 1 BeamWash M, Outcast 2X Wash M) are IP66 with aluminium construction and a C5M marine-grade finish, built for coastal and marine environments; Chauvet also specifies stainless steel hardware on the Outcast 1 BeamWash M.
  • The number broadly tracks size and output within a type. The R1X Wash publishes 2,455 lumens output, the R2X Wash 6,418 and the 37-LED Outcast 3X Wash 13,440. It is not a strict ladder, though: the R3E Spot publishes slightly less output than the R2E Spot (15,705 against 16,345 lumens). What the R3E adds is a zoom.
  • Wash, Spot, Beam, BeamWash, Hybrid tell you the job, as described in our fixture types guide.

Chauvet also lists older Rogues such as the R2X Spot and R3X Wash under “legacy” on its website. They are covered briefly in the last section.

Full comparison table: every current Rogue

Every model Chauvet Professional lists on its Rogue family page, with figures from each model’s specification page. The zoom figure is Chauvet’s quoted zoom range; see reading the spec sheet for what that number means. Weights are the fixture alone.

Output is Chauvet’s published lumens out of the front lens, not the bare LED or lamp figure. Comparing output across very different beam angles still flatters the wash fixtures and undersells the beams, which concentrate their light into a far smaller area.

Wash and BeamWash models

R1X Wash and R2X Wash

These are the Rogues we are asked about most. Both use 25W RGBW quad-colour LEDs with a motorised zoom, 16-bit dimming, 540° pan and 230° tilt, a 2800 to 10000K colour temperature range, selectable PWM for flicker-free work on camera, and both 3-pin and 5-pin DMX with RDM. Chauvet also specifies a “bubble” lens and a user-selectable calibrated 7500K white on the R1X.

The R1X Wash has seven LEDs and weighs 6.2 kg. The R2X Wash has nineteen, published output of 6,418 lumens against 2,455, weighs 10.3 kg, and adds five zones of LED control for pixel-mapping effects. If the fixtures will be the main stage wash from a distance, or in a room with ambient light, the R2X is the safer choice. For side light, small stages, uplighting and rigs where weight and power count, the R1X is the sensible one. At 230V Chauvet lists 299W for the R1X and 344W for the R2X.

For how RGBW mixing and colour temperature behave on skin and scenery, see our colour on stage guide.

R2X Wash VW

A variable-white version of the R2X Wash, built from 19 cool-white and warm-white LEDs covering 2600 to 6075K, with no colour mixing. Chauvet positions it for broadcast and exhibition use. Choose it only if the job never needs colour.

R1 BeamWash

The R1 BeamWash uses seven 40W RGBW LEDs and a lens designed to go from a tight beam at the narrow end to an even wash at the wide end, with a quoted zoom range of 3.4° to 67.7°. At 5.35 kg it is the lightest current Rogue, and Chauvet credits its small size for its fast pan and tilt. Pick it over the R1X Wash when you want mid-air beam effects in haze as well as a wash; pick the R1X when even colour wash coverage matters more.

Outcast 1 BeamWash, 2X Wash and 3X Wash

The IP65 Outcast washes follow the same pattern. The Outcast 1 BeamWash has seven 45W RGBW LEDs, a 3.9° to 55.3° zoom and a 12-zone pixel-mappable RGB ring around the lens. The Outcast 2X Wash uses the same 19 x 25W RGBW layout and five zones as the R2X Wash, with an 8° to 66.1° zoom, in a 9.6 kg IP65 body. The Outcast 3X Wash is the biggest wash in the family: 37 x 25W RGBW LEDs in nine pixel zones, 13,440 lumens output and a 9.3° to 62.6° zoom, at 17.38 kg and 695W at 230V.

Spot models

All current Rogue spots use a single cold-white LED engine with colour wheels, a rotating gobo wheel with interchangeable gobos plus a second wheel of fixed gobos, a motorised iris and focus, and a 3-facet rotating prism (5-facet on the Outcast 3 Spot). Chauvet publishes CRI figures of 68 to 70.4 for them, so they are effects and gobo fixtures rather than flattering key lights.

ModelEngineBeamColour wheelsFrostOutput (lm)Weight

Outcast 3 Spot300W LED4.9°–38.7° zoom2 (7 + white each)Motorised14,98923.2 kg

The R1E and R2E share the same published dimensions and 14.2 kg weight; the R2E brings the bigger engine and the second colour wheel, and lists motorised frost in its spec table (the R1E’s spec table does not list frost, although its product description mentions it, so check before relying on frost). Neither zooms, so with a fixed beam of around 15° the projected gobo size is set by throw distance alone. If your positions vary from venue to venue, or you want to fill a wall with gobos from a short throw, the zoom on the R3E Spot is worth more than extra lumens. Our beam angles and coverage guide shows how to work out spot size from angle and distance.

The Outcast 3 Spot is the IP65 option, with dual colour wheels, dual gobo wheels, iris, 5-facet prism, frost and a 4.9° to 38.7° zoom. It is heavier, at 23.2 kg, and Chauvet notes that its sealed housing also suits indoor installs with fog and haze.

Beam and Hybrid models

The Rogue R3 Beam uses a 300W Ushio NSL discharge lamp rather than an LED, with a 0.8° beam, a 14-colour wheel, 17 gobos, motorised focus and frost, and overlapping 8-facet and 24-facet prisms. Chauvet rates the lamp at 8,000 hours, against 50,000 hours for most of the LED models, so budget for lamp changes. The Outcast 2 Beam puts the same lamp type and 0.8° beam into an IP65 body at 20.5 kg.

The two LED beams are smaller: the Outcast 1L Beam (140W cold white LED, 1.4° beam, 16.1 kg) and the Outcast 1M Beam (120W red, mint and blue LED engine with colour mixing instead of a colour wheel, 1.9° beam, and continuous 360° pan and tilt rotation).

The Outcast 2 Hybrid is the all-rounder: a 400W Ushio NSL lamp (6,000 hours rated life) with separate spot, beam and wash modes, each with its own zoom range, dual gobo wheels, a 13-colour wheel, two layerable prisms and frost. At 24.7 kg it is the heaviest current Rogue. Choose it when you want one fixture type to do aerial beams and gobo projection outdoors.

Indoor R-series or IP65 Outcast?

Every R-series Rogue is rated IP20, dry location. Use one outdoors, under a festival canopy that leaks or anywhere it can get wet, and it needs a properly designed weather enclosure. The Outcast range is rated IP65 for temporary outdoor and wet use; several Outcast models list a pressure-equalising M12 GORE valve as part of that rating.

  • Choose R-series for indoor venues, theatres, churches, conference rooms and touring rigs that stay inside. There is no point paying for sealing you will not use.
  • Choose Outcast for outdoor stages, festivals, building exteriors, and indoor sites with heavy fog or haze, where Chauvet describes the sealed housing as low-maintenance protection against particulates.
  • Choose an M model for cruise ships, waterfronts and theme park exteriors, where salt air is the issue as well as rain.

Reading a Rogue spec sheet

Three numbers on Chauvet’s spec pages are easy to misread.

  • Zoom range. Chauvet’s headline zoom range runs from the narrowest beam angle to the widest cutoff angle. On the R1X Wash, the beam angle is 7.9° to 35.5°, the field angle 11.5° to 50.8° and the cutoff 19.3° to 62.7°; the quoted zoom is 7.9° to 62.7°. For planning how many fixtures cover a stage, work from the field angle.
  • Source versus output lumens. “Lumens – Source” is the bare LED figure; “Lumens – Output” is what leaves the lens. Compare output figures only.
  • Power. Each spec page lists power draw at 230V, from 220W (Outcast 1M Beam) to 695W (Outcast 3X Wash), along with how many units Chauvet allows on a powerCON link. Use these to choose fixtures; the design, installation and testing of the electrical supply for a rig is a job for a competent person.

Rule of thumb

For the same family and lens type, compare fixtures on output lumens at the field angle you will actually use. A zoom fixture at its widest setting spreads the same light over a much larger area than its narrowest figure suggests.

Mixing new and older Rogues

Chauvet now lists several older Rogues as legacy, including the R1X Spot, R2X Spot, R3X Wash and the original R1, R2 and R3 Wash. The current models are designed to sit alongside them: the R1X Wash has a selectable LED output to match legacy R1 Wash fixtures, the R1E Spot can match legacy R1X Spots, the R2E Spot can match legacy R2X Spots, and the R3E Spot has selectable maximum output for matching legacy Rogue movers.

If you are extending a rig of the R2X Spot (300W LED, 7-colour dual wheels, 21.7 kg, now listed as legacy by Chauvet), the R2E Spot is the closest current match on Chauvet’s own matching feature. If you were looking for an R3X Wash, the Outcast 3X Wash publishes the same 37 x 25W RGBW engine, 13,440 lumens and 9.3° to 62.6° zoom in an IP65 body.
